SUMMER SCHOOL: "READING THE BALKAN SUBJECT AND ITS GENDERS"
10TH JUNE - 30TH JUNE, 2001: OHRID, REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA
Director: PROF. D-R KATERINA KOLOZOVA

We are delighted to announce the international Ohrid Summer School 2001:

"READING THE BALKAN SUBJECT AND ITS GENDERS" and to invite 30 young researches and faculty members from the countries of Central and Eastern Europe to attend this year's courses:

1. "Women's History: Perspectives of Ancient Women's and Balkan Women's Studies and the Construction of Gender" (Prof.Svetlana Slapsak)

2. "Identity and Difference in the Focus of the Couple" (Prof. Miglena Nikolcina)

3. "Gender Studies and its Theories of Critique of the Construction of Subject: Reading the Balkan Subject(s)" (Prof. Rosi Braidotti)

The principle goal of the Ohrid Summer School in Gender Studies in 2001 will be the establishing of the conceptual and methodological specificities, or even specific needs, of the theoretical and scientific investigations into the gender issues in the region.

Through the application of the methodologies pertaining to the contemporary theoretical trends in the field (of gender studies), the OSS in Gender Studies will attempt to establish a certain number of gender issues considered specific for the region. By doing this it will inevitably address the more general question of the "Balkan subjectivity(-ies)" and identity(-ies), although from the specific perspective of the theories of gender. Thus the OSU SS in Gender Studies will play an active part in the overall critical positioning that the Ohrid Summer University 2001, in its entirety, will purport, namely the introduction of a critical perspective with respect to the prevailing notions of the "Balkan", "balkanization" and the dominant Imaginary/discourses about the Balkan identity(/-ies).

The Summer School will award 30 fellowships (full board, and transportation) to the selected applicants.
