CALL FOR PAPERS
(Deadline for submission of proposals: 31 March 2001)

"A New Girl Order? Young Women and the Future of Feminist Inquiry"
A Working Conference
14-16 November 2001
King's College, University of London, UK.

This conference aims to bring together scholars, teachers and activists from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds to explore a range of issues concerning young women as we move into the new century.

Among the questions we wish to pose are:

How are young women positioned and how do they position themselves in the changing postindustrial and postmodern world?

How has girlhood itself taken on new meanings as we enter the twenty-first century?

Who speaks for young women and girls?

What is the future of feminist inquiry into the lives of young women?

What enduring connections are there between young women, feminism and Women's Studies?

We invite submissions in the form of papers, working groups and panels addressing such topics as:
- the changing and/or enduring constructions of girls' class, culture and nation-based identities under late modernity
- young women's cultures and politics
- third wave feminism and grrl power
- methodological questions surrounding research by/about/with young women
- new research agendas for the study of young women in the 21st century
- young women's attitudes towards feminism
- the future of Women's Studies and Gender Studies for a new generation
- young women confronting new technologies and new economies

The conference is planned to be open and discussion-based and for this reason we particularly encourage presentations based on  research work-in-progress and presentations from postgraduate researchers.

The conference is jointly organised by the Centre for Women's Studies and Gender Research, Monash University, Melbourne, the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies, Kings College London and the Monash University Centre, Kings College London.
